About The Artist

“I have concentrated on the portrait, as for me, the face is an endlessly interesting subject to paint, and one to which we can all relate.

I work from photographs, as they provide an accurate foundation upon which the painting can develop, whilst still keeping the subtlety of a moment’s expression. Most of my portraits are Acrylic on Canvas or Board but I also use Pastel and Conte on Tinted Paper.

For a further selection of my work and details on prices and ordering, please visit my website.”

Happy Mum with Commission of Milo

‘Thanks for the portrait of our lovely boy Milo! It’s one thing to capture the facial elements of a person accurately, it’s another to portray something of the metaphysical/spirit of the subject. You do both… in spades. Thank you so much for investing so much care and intelligence into every stroke. We love it!’

Artist Biography

“Drawing and painting have been important to me since childhood. My best presents were cartridge pads, tins of crayons and paintboxes. The simple pleasure of making ‘pictures’ was so much more fun than maths homework or Evensong choir practice with all those psalms; but then, what isn’t?

At school I had a wonderful art teacher, Pat Adams, who encouraged me to explore different media and study painters past and present. So a new world opened up and with it, dreams of being an artist. I took a Foundation Course in Art and Design in Epsom and then started a Fine Art Degree in Bristol. I continued to paint during my spare time from work and gradually concentrated on portraiture.

The human face and form crosses all boundaries and is therefore the most familiar and accessible of subjects. I had painted family and friends from life over the years, but once I started working from photos, my confidence grew. To start with this made me uneasy, until I found that painters – Sickert, for example, had used photos as a starting point. From those early efforts I began to get commissions from family, friends and then by word of mouth. I look to the portraits by artists such as Degas, Sargent and Freud to help me with ideas about brushwork, composition and colour.”

About The Artist

Mark is a self-taught artist, and began painting in 1992 after attending classes by Alan Hume, a Staines artist whose draughtsman skills in watercolour and Pastel inspired Mark to start painting in watercolour.

Subsequently, Mark joined the Sunbury Art Group for a few years, but due to business commitments, discontinued painting until some 15 years later. In 2007 he joined the Littleton Artists Group, where he learnt to paint in oils under the tutelage of professional artist John Green.

Mark has exhibited at the Chertsey Gallery and exhibited at the Bank Gallery, Chobham in July 2010.

About The Artist

I am a self-taught artist and have been working for myself from my home in Bookham near Leatherhead in Surrey since 1986, after a career as a cartographic draughtsman. All of my work is commissioned by businesses and private individuals. I work mainly in gouache watercolour, but I occasionally use graphite pencil and oils.
I rarely exhibit my work but have had one exhibition in Leatherhead Theatre, where 2 of my paintings were stolen! The first and only time it has happened at that venue in 25 years.

For the last 20 years, I have been concentrating on producing ‘caricature’ or humorous portrait watercolour paintings for businesses around the UK. My ‘caricatures’ are NOT really caricatures in that I do not exaggerate the facial features of the person and they are not quick sketches or drawings.

My clients have always preferred to see the subjects being instantly recognisable. Each one takes me several days to complete so I DO NOT attend functions, weddings etc. where a quick sketch artist is required. I am happy to undertake a painting or drawing on any subject, providing a nice clear photo reference is supplied. Occasionally, if the photo/s are not of sufficient quality, I take the photographs myself, if it’s feasible to do so.

Corporate and Portrait Caricatures

Businesses and private individuals around the country have been delighted with David’s paintings and drawings since 1986. His corporate caricatures have graced the walls of many homes and offices for over 20 years. Over that time, his work as a caricature artist has brought a wealth of experience, acquired to meet customers’ needs.

Each picture is normally supplied mounted and framed or unframed if preferred. His role as caricature artist has won him many corporate commissions. Satisfied corporate customers to date include: Agfa, BP, GlaxoSmithKline, Biwater, Sainsbury Savacentre, Thorn Lighting Ltd., Lafarge Roofing, British Army and many more.

About The Artist

‘I aspire to create “Visible Feelings” that can be shared by those who care to pause and wonder. I call upon my life’s experiences to inspire me and I let the feeling emerge in my work. I have been amazed, and sometimes disturbed, by what I have learned about myself through my paintings. I am so much richer for knowing myself better.’
Alan Brain
Alan Brain Vapour-Trails

Alan Brain discovered painting about twelve years ago when he attended a water colouring class with some friends. It led to a change of direction that he has never regretted. Today, his unique style, combined with spiritual awareness, produces works of unusual vibrancy and colour. As a former pilot and constant flyer, the immensity of the heavens with its changing moods has fascinated Alan. It features in many of his paintings where he manages to capture the vastness and mysteriousness of space.
His early years in Japan may have enhanced his bold view of landscapes and skies and you can see in his work the influence of wonderful open spaces to be found in places such as Wales, Arizona, New Mexico and Africa, all of which Alan visits regularly. However, such harmony with nature cannot be taught, it is an intrinsic part of the artist that we are fortunate to glimpse.

Alan exhibits several times a year in and around his home in Chobham Surrey, England. His work has been accepted for several prestigious exhibitions in London, including the Guild of Aviation Artists and the Society of Marine Artists. Alan also applies his teaching skills (he was a Flying Instructor) and helps his fellow artists through his course called ‘Find You Own Painting Direction’ and by one to one tuition. He believes it is important to give something back to those less fortunate than ourselves and is a strong supporter of the Samaritans charity; a percentage from his painting sales are contributed to his local branch.
